Description: This Willem Steenkamp custom Nomad Flipper is a beautiful large utility folder that will feel as comfortable in the pocket as it would in any collection. The drop point blade and ergonomic handle are perfectly designed for the task at hand. The folder has incredibly smooth action thanks to the IKBS pivot. The Ikoma Korth Bearing System (IKBS) was originally designed to fit balisong knives and uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. The ambidextrous flipper is tremendously easy to use.
Willem was accepted as a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA) in May of 2007. His attention to detail and passion for his craft is clearly evident in his knives. His fit and finish is on par with the best makers out there!
The drop point blade is formed from M390 stainless steel, a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds onto it due to its high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. Its unique powder metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The blade is hollow ground for easy maintenance.
The scales are made from antique Westinghouse Micarta. This Micarta was developed in 1910 by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as an industrial thermo-set laminate for electrical insulation. This light toned Micarta was lost in a warehouse and only recently discovered. The top shows the beautiful yellowing with age that makes this rare Micarta so captivating.
Handle scales meet perfectly with zirconium bolsters. Zirconium is a transitional metal that is primarily mined in South Africa and Australia. It is highly resistant to corrosion and scuffing. Timascus pivot collars have been inlaid into both sides of the bolsters and surround the custom blue anodized titanium pivot. The scales and bolsters sit on fileworked blue anodized titanium liners which surround a zirconium backbar. A blackened titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-handed, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
