Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration came from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans. He has also made knives for Zero Dark Thirty and The Terminal List. Daniel and Karen were inducted into the Cutlery Hall of Fame in June of 2025. Over the last decade, Daniel's hand forged knives have become increasingly rare to come by!
This hunting knife has been in a private collection since it was made by Daniel in the early 2000s. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. It has not been used to cut.
This Crown Stag Hunter features a damascus blade forged to shape from carbon steels. The grinds reveal the swirling, high contrast pattern. The flats feature a forge finished file-mark pattern. Daniel's touchmark is on the right side of the blade. A fileworked spine provides a comfortable thumb purchase.
The handle is genuine stag crown, carefully hand selected, shaped, and finished. Visually impressive, the natural texture of the stag offers a sure, comfortable grip. Hand domed pins secure the hidden tang in place. A sinew wrap finishes the handle.
The sheath is was made by Karen Shook. It is hand cut and then hand-stitched. The rawhide wrap is sewn around an inner pocket of leather. Decoration includes deer hide thongs, horse hair, copper trade beads, and tin cones. Tiny blue and red beads are sewn to the throat of the sheath. The sheath itself is a work of art.
This is a rare opportunity to own a handmade, custom piece by Mastersmith Daniel Winkler one of the most collectible knifemakers alive today.
