Description: Michael Quesenberry has this to say about the art of knifemaking - "A custom knife should do three things well: be visually appealing, well-balanced in the hand, and hold a razor-sharp edge." This knife clearly manifests the three characteristics prized by Michael. With the level of precision and skill shown in this knife, it is no surprise that it won Best Hand Forged at the 2011 Boise Knife Show. Mike became a journeyman smith in 2010 and was honored to receive his master smith stamp in 2014. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Quesenberry could have made it yesterday.
Michael began by forging the blade to shape from W2 carbon steel. The bolster and distal tapered full tang are integral, a technique often seen in factory knives but rarely in handmade knives due to the difficulty of construction. A clear hamon (heat treatment line) is visible on the blade. Mike borrowed his heat treatment technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coated with clay, resulting in a softer spine and ultra-high performance cutting edge. This line shows the transition between the soft spine, and the hard, long lasting edge. A 1200 grit hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality.
The fit between jet black ebony wood and tang is perfectly executed. The scales are set with hand domed nickel silver pins.
Exceptional work throughout!
