Description: Journeyman Smith Gary Rodewald's knives are exceptional -- combining a classic sense of elegance with perfect implementation. This Ironwood Hamon Fighter is a perfect example of Rodewald's clean work.
The W2 carbon steel blade was forged to shape. Borrowing a technique from Japanese swords, prior to quenching, the spine was coated with clay. The resulting differential heat treatment line (known as a gunome hamon) travels across the blade in a gentle, undulating pattern. This technique results in a soft, supportive spine and a keen, long lasting edge. A distal taper ensures a perfect balance, while having a very strong blade.
The handle is formed from presentation grade desert ironwood(Olneya tesota). Ironwood is one of the most desirable materials to make a custom knife from. The dramatic, warm toned wood has elegant darker lines moving through the figure. Mosaic pins nicely highlight the warm toned, convoluted wood.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather sheath made by Godron Kenley is included.
Exceptional work throughout!
