Description: Mastersmith Burt Foster is well known for his performance hunting knives. When he put his hand to creating a camp knife, the result was equally dramatic and exciting! This knife was forged in March 2006 and has been meticulously cared for. It is the only one he ever made like it. It has been meticulously cared for and is in mint/new condition. It does not appear to ever have been used to cut and has not been sharpened after Burt forged it.
The long blade was forged from 1095 carbon steel. A differential heat treatment was accomplished through a Japanese technique where clay is layered on the spine, forming a heat sink. The resulting hardening line, called a hamon, is extremely dramatic and the artistry of the pattern shows off Burt's skills at their best. A blade with a hard edge and softer back is not only beautiful but was done over the years to give a simple steel the ability to cut very well but still have enough toughness in the soft spine to keep it from breaking. The blade shape is Japanese influenced, drawing inspiration from the tanto design. By distal tapering the tang, but keeping the blade full thickness, Burt has moved the balance out toward the tip, making this a knife that you'll really want to swing through the air when you hold it. Merino sheep horn scales are set with a lanyard hole and stainless pins. The sheep horn provides a sure, comfortable grip. Exceptional work throughout.
