Description: Born from a love of metalworking and the pursuit of the American Dream, Hoffman Blacksmithing creates heirloom-quality axes and tools meant to be passed down for generations. Founder Liam Hoffman began forging at just thirteen years old, starting with a humble fire pit and trailer hitch anvil. What began as a backyard passion in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina has grown into a 6,000-square-foot workshop in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. There, Hoffman and his team of artisans craft every tool by hand with the same dedication to craftsmanship, durability, and authenticity that has defined the trade for centuries. Hoffman axes are often regarded as being in a league of their own in the bushcrafting community.
The axe head begins as a rectangular billet of steel heated in a forge to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in an amazing transformation in malleability. The old saying "strike while the iron is hot" is never truer, as this is the opportunity to mold and shape the steel, which now has properties like clay. Hoffman Blacksmithing uses traditional forging techniques on early 1900s-era power hammers to artfully form an axe head from 4142 chromium molybdenum alloy carbon steel, which provides excellent chip resistance. The 1-1/4 lb head features a 3 inch cutting edge. The head measures just under 5-1/4 inches from edge to back of the hammer. Hoffman's touchmark is stamped on the right side of the blade.
The oval handle is made in-house from hand selected high-grade hickory. The handle was turned on a copy lathe then finished by hand. It is hand sanded and oiled to create a smooth surface to prevent calluses. The handle culminates in a bulb end.
The premium leather sheath is custom fitted to the unique axe and assembled with barge cement and Chicago screws.
Excellent work throughout!
