Description: Jean Wilke is a young custom knifemaker from Pretoria, South Africa. His knives are exceptionally well designed and tested. His attention to detail is clearly evident in each of his creations. It is very exciting to see such a young maker with such tremendous talent.
The blade is hand forged 1075 carbon steel and features a meticulous hand rubbed satin finish. 1075 provides a nice balance of high edge holding and chip resistance. Borrowing from the world of Japanese swords, Jean coated the spine with clay prior to heat treatment. The clay acts as a heat sink, keeping the spine softer and supportive, while allowing the edge to be exceptionally hard. The repetitive, controlled, undulating heat treatment line seen in the blade is called a gunome hamon. The blade is distal tapered and feels exceptional in the hand. The spine and choil are nicely rounded for comfort. Jean's mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is red bushwillow, secured to the tang using a hand domed pin. A hand textured titanium spacer separates the handle from the 303 stainless steel guard.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
