Description: South African knifemaker Anton van der Westhuizen is from Port Elizabeth. He is an active member of the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa. He creates high end, elegant folding knives using only the best modern materials available.
This knife utilizes a design developed by the great Ron Lake. Labeled by sportswriter B.R Hughes, as the "Father of the Modern Day Folding Knife," Lake has been making knives for over 50 years. In 1970, he designed and produced the first ever Tail-Lock Interframe folder. The design employed a machined metal frame in which the handle material was housed, thus protecting the handle material and making for a stronger knife. Additionally, placing the tab at the end of the lock bar gave the user a mechanical advantage. At that time, these design elements were recognized as major advancements in folding knives. This knife is a wonderful tribute to Ron's legacy.
The drop point blade is hand ground from Grabak pattern damascus forged by Damasteel in Sweden. This high performing damascus is created using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing to provide excellent edge retention and unmatched beauty. A nail nick is available on the left side of the blade. Anton's touchmark is engraved on the spine in order to keep a clean appearance on the blade.
The blade is perfectly centered. It has smooth, consistent action with a firm lock up. The tail lock gives extra leverage, making disengaging the knife extremely easy.
The handle frame is polished 416 stainless steel. Hammer and chisel style hand engraving by Armin Winkler is featured throughout the frame and tail lock. Winkler, who is based in Paarl, South Africa (near Cape Town), graduated as an engraver in Ferlach, Austria in 1977. Most of his work is done in the gun world so we rarely see his exquisite engraving on knives. The classy scroll engraving is exceptionally well executed. Vintage emerald green paper Micarta is inlaid into both sides of the frame.
A zipper case is included to protect the knife during storage.
Excellent work throughout!
