Description: Jean Wilke is a young custom knifemaker from Pretoria, South Africa. His knives are exceptionally well designed and tested. His attention to detail is clearly evident in each of his creations. He is currently working with Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey, travelling back and forth every two weeks, alternating between working at Heavin Forge and his home forge, Fire Goby Forge. It is very exciting to see such a young man with such tremendous talent.
The Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife is a double-edged dagger with a foil grip. It was developed by William Ewart Fairbairn and Eric Anthony Sykes in Shanghai based on ideas developed while serving on the Shanghai Municipal Police in China before World War II. It was made famous during World War II when issued to British Commandos, the Airborne Forces, the SAS and many other units, especially for the Normandy landings in June 1944. This custom F/S Style Dagger pays homage to this historic knife.
The blade is hand ground damascus hand forged by Wilke. The high layer count firestorm pattern is exceptionally dramatic. The blade is perfectly ground. Daggers are among the hardest knives to grind -- any flaw in symmetry becomes immediately noticeable.
The handle combines antiqued bronze fittings with flued Dymondwood. True to the original design, the handle is exceptionally comfortable and provides a sure, non-slip grip.
This Fairbairn-Sykes Style Dagger is accompanied by a black leather custom sheath -- also very true to the original design.
Exceptional work throughout!
