Description: This Japanese Kiwari wood Splitting Axe was made by Mizuno Seisakujo in Sango Niigata, Japan. Mizuno Seisakujo is led by traditional craftsman Isao Misuno (b. 1942). In 2006, Isao-san was honored as a Niigata Prefecture Master Craftsman and was certified as Traditional Master Craftsman (dentoukougeishi) by the Japanese government in 2012. This honor helps preserve traditional crafts by encouraging passing these techniques on to future generations. All parts including the head and handle are handmade by craftsmen in Sanjo.
The head is hand forged in a three-layer laminated style called warikomi. A hard steel insert of .45% carbon steel (S45C) is set in the middle of the head. This is surrounded by two softer steel layers to support the cutting edge. The head features three grove on the left side and four on the right. This is a traditional mark in Japan to signify protection by the Yaoyorozu from accidents during dangerous mountain work.
This Japanese Kiwari wood Splitting Axe is designed for splitting logs and similar tasks. It is incredibly robust and heavy-duty. This style of hatchet is designed for precise cutting and splitting jobs, not for blunt blows.
The axe handle is made from sapwood of Japanese white oak. This treatment ensures a strong, resilient handle that is easy to grip. The oak is harvested from the norther Kanto region, which is considered the highest grade in Japan. Oak in this area grows slowly, resulting in a wood that is dense and extremely durable, making it ideal for use as handles for chopping firewood. As is traditional, the wedges at the top of the handle protrude, allowing the handle to be tightened if necessary.
