Description: De Wet van Zyl is a bladesmith from Durban, South Africa. He started making knives in 2005 and went full time in 2009 when he opened Darkwing Blades. He spent two years apprenticing with Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey at Heavin Forge, their prestigious bladesmithing school in South Africa. He was named as a ""Maker to Watch"" by Blade Magazine and has won numerous awards from knife shows hosted in South Africa. His work is exceptional and we are excited to promote his work at BladeGallery!
The drop point blade is De Wet's own multi-bar mosaic damascus showing his tremendous skill at the forge. O1 tool steel makes up the cutting edge, providing excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The bar of mosaic damascus is forged from 5160, EN45, carbon steel and nickel providing a bright, high contrast pattern. EN45 is commonly used in high performance swords due to its flexibility and shock resistance. Lines of ferronickel (35% nickel and 65% iron) separate the mosaic damascus from the O1 cutting edge. A cracked ice appearance was brought out in the ferronickel during the etching process. The blade is spectacular and is a tremendous example of skilled forging. De Wet's mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is dyed and stabilized curly ash. It is heirloom fit to a matching mosaic damasus bolster. The contoured handle fills your hand and has a great balance.
To keep the knife close at hand, a leather sheath with an ostrich shin overlay is included.
Excellent work throughout!
