Description: This exceptional XL Hunter was hand built by California knifemaker Pedro Gonzalez. Born and raised in Southern California, Pedro is the youngest of 7 children. He grew up working with his father, who taught him everything he knows in terms of mechanics and fabrication. That passion of building and crafting things with his hands led him to knifemaking. In August of 2018, Pedro came across of video of someone making a 2x72 knife grinder and though, "I can build one of those." Everything snowballed and soon he was building his own knives. Gonzales is a one-man show from start to finish. Every aspect of the knives and sheaths is done by him, He is a stickler on aesthetics, fit and finish, as well as functionality. His knives are a work of art -- eye catching, elegant, but purposefully built for a specific task.
The blade is 1095 carbon steel. Pedro borrowed his heat treatment technique from the world of Japanese swords. The spine was coated in clay prior to quenching. This results is a softer, supportive spine with a keen, long lasting edge. The transition line between the softer and harder steel is called a hamon. The raised clip is brought just shy of sharpened.
Contoured stabilized maple burl handle scales are set on the distal tapered full tang, ensuring a perfect balance. The presentation grade wood has tremendous swirling figure. The scales are set with brass pins and a brass-lined lanyard hole. Black/canvas Micarta liners add a nice contrast.
This knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath along with a storage box and five Septem Knives stickers.
Both the knife and sheath are exceptionally well done, showing both a tremendous sense of design and skill in the workshop.
