Description: This Badger Boot Dagger Integral Survival Knife is the work of machinist and knifemaker Derek Rausch. Like its namesake, the Badger Survival knife is small, rugged, and uncompromising.
Derek qualified as an Instrument Maker through the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Once qualified, he established Rausch Engineering in October 1983. Derek completed a knife making course with Owen Wood in 1993 and became a member of The Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa in 1994. He soon realized there was a need for a knifemaking supplies shop as there was no single place in South Africa to purchase all the items required to produce a knife. Together with Owen Wood, he established the first knifemaking supplies shop in South Africa. Derek’s training lent itself to the manufacture of various quality components and tooling such as belt sanders and contact wheels, required in the industry. Derek designs and manufactures items such as pivots screws, drilling and tapping jigs, interscrews and thumb studs. We were very excited when he showed us a small selection of these integral survival knives on a visit to his workshop in Pretoria, South Africa.
This knife is machined from a single piece of D2 semi-stainless steel. Although survival knives are very popular, they are often prone to breaking from heavy use due to often having smaller parts that are easier to break. An integral knife made from one piece will have incredible structural integrity and will hold up well to hard use. These knives really show off Derek's skill as a machinist. A black Cerakote finish provides rust resistance.
The integral handle is hollow, providing storage of survival items such as fishing line or matches. The threaded cap included an O ring to create a water tight seal. The knurled handle is comfortable and provides a slip resistant grip.
The knife includes a black leather sheath with a retention strap.
