Description: Journeyman Smith Gary Rodewald makes an exceptional Bowie. Though this Back Country Bowie is a high performance knife, it would be equally at home in any collection. The fit and finish is excellent.
The 7" clip point blade is hand forged W-2 carbon steel and features a clay zone heat treatment. This style of heat treatment, which originates in high performance Japanese swords, uses clay as a heat sink when quenching. The result is a temper line (called a hamon), which shows a differential hardness between the hard cutting edge and soft, resilient spine. A hand rubbed satin finish adds an heirloom quality to the blade.
The contoured handle is a composite of stacked G10 and carbon fiber secured to the tang with a central pin. The handle fills out your hand nicely and provides a secure grip. The handle is finished with a satin finished 416 stainless steel guard. A red fiber liner adds a touch of contrast and matches the included red lanyard.
To keep the knife close at hand, a custom sheath made by Nez Perce Saddlery is included.
Excellent work throughout!
