Description: This knife was inspired by the knife used by the Kruger National park's first game ranger, Harry Wolhuter. Wolhuter used the knife in 1903 to kill a lion that attacked him while on patrol in the park. His memories of this event (along with others) can be read in his autobiography, Memories of a Game Ranger. This knife has inspired many South African knifemakers for the historic place in their country's heritage. The original knife used by Wolhuter was made in England and was likely designed as a chef's utility knife. This utility knife is a great compromise between a chef's knife and a paring knife. This makes it perfect for a multitude of small tasks where more precise cuts are needed, such as trimming broccoli, green beans, or other smaller vegetables. Some cooks like to use it in their hand, too—almost like a large paring knife. Others like its smaller size as an alternative to the chef’s knife. Utility knives are also sometimes called sandwich knives because they work well on almost everything that goes into a sandwich—from thin-skinned vegetables such as tomatoes, to meats and cheeses. Whether used in the kitchen or out in the field, it is a tremendously practical knife,
The 5-1/2 inch drop point blade was forged from 52100 carbon steel. It was forged closely to shape, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. The blade features a hand rubbed satin finish.
Stabilized buckeye burl handle scales are set on a distal tapered full tang for strength and durability. The light toned wood has a dramatic, swirling figure. Handle scales are set on the distal tapered full tang using stainless pins.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched, embossed cowhide sheath.
