Description: Gary Rodewald's knives are consistently excellent. He combines elegance and ferocity with perfect implementation.
The W2 carbon steel blade was hand forged to shape. Gary is an outstanding bladesmith, creating knives with exceptional edge holding as well as exceptional beauty. For heat treatment, Gary borrowed a technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coated with insullating clay. The resulting differential heat treatment line (known as a hamon) travels across the blade in a gentle, undulating pattern. This technique results in a soft, supportive spine and a long lasting edge, as well as a stunning detail to the blade's finish. A swedge results in a keen, aggressive tip.
The handle is hand contoured from African blackwood. A central mosic pin sets the handle in place and adds a nice contrast. It is nicely sculpted to swell at the palm and pommel.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched and tooled leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
