Description: This Kosie Steenkamp custom Samson Jr. front flipper is a fantastic compact utility folder -- yet it would feel equally comfortable in most any collection. The drop point blade and ergonomic handle are perfectly designed for any task at hand. The folder has incredibly smooth action thanks to the IKBS bearing system. The Ikoma Korth Bearing System (IKBS) was originally designed to fit balisong knives and uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. The front flipper is tremendously easy to use and won't get caught on things in your pocket. This style of flipper is designed to be flicked out with your thumb.
Kosie was introduced to knife making by his brother, Willem Steenkamp. He began making knives in 2007 and was accepted as a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA) in May of 2009. Kosie is a stickler for detail and perfection, all these qualities and his obvious passion for this craft comes through in his work.
The drop point blade is made from M390 stainless steel with a hand rubbed satin finish. M390 is a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds onto it due to a high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. Its unique powder metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge.
The handle combines blue lightning strike carbon fiber scales to antique Westinghouse Micarta bolsters. This Micarta was developed in 1910 by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as an industrial thermo-set laminate for electrical insulation. This light toned Micarta was lost in a warehouse and only recently discovered. The top shows the beautiful yellowing with age that makes this Micarta so captivating. A matching blue lightning strike carbon fiber pivot collar surrounds the custom pivot. Black G-10 liners complement the blue lightning strike carbon fiber scales. Bronze anodized titanium liners surround a blue lightning strike carbon fiber back spacer. An orange peel textured titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-handed, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
