Description: I was tremendously pleased to meet bladesmith Dave Skinner at the 2019 Guild Show of Southern Africa. Dave brings a refined eye and tremendous skill at the forge to his knives. Over the last few years, his work has continued to develop a level of refinement that is found in very few knifemakers.
This utility is a tremendous example of his work. It was inspired by renowned South African knifemaker Fanie La Grange. Fanie's unique aesthetic is nicely reflected in this drop point utility.
The blade was forged to shape from 1080 carbon steel, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. A gently undulating line (called a hamon) travels across of the flat ground, satin finished blade. This technique, borrowed from the world of Japanese swords, requires meticulous care. The spine is coated with insulating clay prior to heat quenching. This ensures a keen, long lasting edge, with a softer, supportive spine.
The contoured handle is presentation grade stabilized amboyna burl. It is set on the distal tapered full tang with eight stainless steel pins. By tapering both the blade and tang, Skinner ensures that this knife as perfect balance. You won't want to put it down. 303 stainless steel bolsters bring weight to the center of the knife. The bolsters are meticulously engraved by Belgium-born artist Julien Marchal. Julien studied engraving and gun making at Léon Mignon Liège in Belgium and now lives in South Africa.
This utility knife is accompanied by a custom wet formed cowhide sheath.
Exquisite work throughout!
