Description: I was very excited when I first got a look at Ben Akin's knives. Ben is a custom knifemaker from Washington State. He is an avid sportsman and so it is no surprise that he makes custom knives for the outdoors. His knives are exceptionally well designed and tested. His attention to detail is clearly evident in each of his creations. He is a member of the American Bladesmith Society, the Idaho Knife Association, The Oregon Knife Collectors Association, and the Montana Knifemakers Association. He both forges and stock removes his knives.
This high performance fillet knife is sure to become a 'goto' knife -- both in the kitchen and when out fishing. This beautiful knife is the right tool for two key tasks — boning and filleting. When boning, the narrow, sharp blade gets in close to the bone, making it easy to separate meat from bone. The extremely sharp edge even cuts through fibrous material with ease. It’s perfect for trimming the silverskin from a tenderloin or even making your own cutlets. The narrow blade reduces drag as you cut against the meat, so cutting is fast and easy. When it comes to filleting fish, the blade's 7-1/4 inch length is just right to glide through the body of large fish, quickly removing bones and skin. The semi-firm knife has a slight flex making filleting a breeze.
The blade is high performing AEB-L stainless steel. Many knifemakers and metallurgists feel that AEB-L, with its small crystalline size, tremendous edge stability and toughness, is among the best stainless steels used in knifemaking today. AEB-L was developed for razor blades with a very fine grain structure making it easy to sharpen while maintaining good edge holding capabilities. The flat grind provides a very efficient cutting geometry.
The contoured handle is made from dyed and stabilized camel bone. Stabilized bone holds up beautifully to hard use. It is set on a full tang for strength and durability using mosaic and nickel silver pins. The handle is beautifully shaped for a secure comfortable grip.
The knife is accompanied by a custom, hand tooled leather sheath by Cindy Akin Leathercrafts, Ben's wife. The premium veg-tanned Wickett & Craig leather avoids the chemical in chrome tanned leather that can harm the surface of steel blades. Ritza Tiger Thread stands up to the elements while you are out and about.
Excellent work throughout!
