Description: Daniel Winkler became a fulltime knifemaker in 1988 and received accreditation as an American Bladesmith Society master bladesmith in 1993. He has spent more than three decades studying and perfecting the nuances and handmade knives. Winkler Knives is a custom manufacturing operation that represents the evolution of Mastersmith Daniel Winkler’s knifemaking expertise coupled with the needs and field experience of Tier 1 Special Operations Teams from around the world.
These tools were crafted in the Winkler Knives shop in Northwestern North Carolina by skilled Blue Ridge Mountain artisans. They were created to provide unfailing performance and to last a lifetime. The Winkler Knives touch mark represents their unwavering commitment to producing the highest quality knives, axes, and breaching tools available.
The rustic Highland Hunter and Hatchet Set is among my favorite new editions Winkler Knives has offered in quite some time! These designs are born from knowledge created from a true understanding of outdoor survival. They are very reminiscent of Mastersmith Daniel Winkler's hand forged knives. There really isn't anything you couldn't accomplish in an outdoor environment using just these two tools. The first 50 Highland Hatchets and first 100 Highland Hunters will be individually numbered. If you order this set you will receive a set with matching serial numbers. Serial numbers 2-5 will be sold as a set.
The Highland Hunter features a 4-3/4 inch blade made from 80CrV2 carbon steel and features a non-glare black oxide finish. A fileworked thumbrest provides excellent traction. The flat ground blade is perfect for skinning, field prep, and would handle minor chopping tasks well. Quarter sawn curly white oak scales are secured to a fully distal tapered blade and tang. The curly oak has tremendous figure and is finished with a rich brown stain and beeswax to provide its rustic appearance. The Winkler Knives touchmark and serial # is marked on the spine. A brown leather wrapped Kydex sheath with belt clip will keep the knife close by. The sheath also includes a removable Celtic trinity knot overlay.
The Highland Hatchet features a 2.6" cutting edge and measures 5 inches from the edge to the back of the hammer. The haft of the axe to the top of the head measures in at 11 inches. The axe is long enough to deliver an effective blow, but short enough to be light on the belt and easy to carry in the field. Quarter sawn curly white oak scales are secured to a fully distal tapered tang. This axe will excel at chores around the campsite from hammering in stakes to chopping firewood, and will serve as an exceptional tomahawk as well. A lanyard can be added at the end of the handle for extra retention if desired. A kydex sheath keeps the axe close by and can be attached to a belt or molle compatible equipment.
Made in the USA.
