Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration came from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans. Today, Winkler's focus is on the Winkler Knives range of knives. His hand forged knives are no longer being made. This is one of his very rare, hand forged knives. It is has been meticulously cared for in a private collection. By all appearances, Winkler could have just made it.
Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook worked together to create knives that have a timeless beauty and quickly became family heirlooms. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other makers' work. This Damascus Skinner with Stag has a tremendous sense of presence. Carbon steels were forged into a many layered random pattern damascus. The flats were textured to resemble the patterns of an old Nickelson file. The spine is hand fileworked for a secure thumb purchase.
The stag handle provides a secure, comfortable grip. A textured and antiqued ferrule and pommel surround the stag.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide and has a single seam. Leather fringe is decorated with trade beads, tin cones and horsehair.
Exceptional work throughout and a very rare find!
