Description: I first encountered Fanie La Grange's knives while visiting renowned bladesmith Etorre Gianferrari at his home in Cape Town. Gianferrari had brought out some of his favorite knives from his collection -- pieces that inspired him. La Grange's work was prominent among them. I was immediately captivating by Fanie's work and began seeking it out for my private collection.
Fanie La Grange was an iconic South African Knifemaker who started in his workshop in Orkney and then moved to Cape Town in the 1990s. He joined the Knifemakers Guild of Souther Africa in 1986. He and Neels Roos founded the Knifemakers' Guild Of Cape Town and had a substantial influence on South African designers and knifemakers. La Grange passed away in October of 2012, and is still recognized for his incredible design details and superior build.
This exceptional Askari Hunter was made in June of 2005. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday. Askari are local soliders that served with European colonial powers in Africa.
The blade was formed from Fanie's favorite steel, Sandvic 12c27. If features a high hollow grind and is meticulously hand satin finished.
The nicely contoured handle is formed from buffalo horn boss. A distal tapered full tang ensures strength and durability along with perfect balance. Stainless steel bolsters are perfectly fit to both blade and handle and feature a differential finish. An integral lanyard loop extends from the end of the tang.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched buffalo leather sheath.
The exceptional work on this knife will have you searching for more of La Grange's knives. Regrettably, they have become increasingly rare over the years.
