Description: Master Ichiro Hattori is considered one of the greatest cutlery makers in Japan. He started making knives at the age of 18 while working for his father's kitchen knife factory, Masahiro. At 32, he started his own company Hattori Hamono and began producing high end hunting knives so he would not compete against his dad's company. Today his hunting knives are rare and considered highly collectible among avid knife collectors and outdoorsmen alike. This KD30-HT70 hunter has been kept in a private collection and by all appearances, Hattori-san could have made it yesterday!
The drop point blade is made from san mai damascus with a Cowry X stainless steel core. Cowry X powdered metallurgical steel was made by Daido in Japan. It is considered by many knife users and makers to be among the best stainless steels ever used to make knives. Regretably, Daido hasn't made it for many years now and knives made with it are becoming increasingly hard to come by. It has the unique ability to be hardened up to 67 Hrc without becoming too brittle to use. The softer, supportive damascus sides provide an elegant look and protect the extremely hard core from cracking or breaking. The blade is convex ground and distal tapered.
Cocobolo handle scales are set to the full tang using five pins and a lanyard tube. Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) is an exceptionally beautiful, yet durable exotic wood considered highly desirable for custom knives. The scales are a nice mix of warm red tones with darker lines moving through the figure. The scales are nicely contoured to fill out the hand and provide a comfortable, secure grip. A stainless steel guard finishes the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a brown leather sheath is included. The knife is also accompanied by the original Hattori presentation box, KD30 pamplet and knife guide.
Excellent work throughout!
