Description: Mastersmith Jay Hendrickson's knives have always inspired me. There is a gentlemanly elegance to his work that matches his personality. These days, Jay makes less knives than he used to. I was pleased when he let me know he had some work that he had just completed.
Fine silver scrolls are inlaid into presentation grade the curly redwood wood handle. As the name suggests, this Alaskan Ulu Hunter is inspired by the classic Inuit Ulu blade. This traditional all-purpose knife used by Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut women. This unique knife was utilized in applications as diverse as skinning and cleaning animals, cutting a child's hair, cutting food, as a weapon and, if necessary, trimming blocks of snow and ice used to build an igloo.
Hendrickson forged the blade from 1095 carbon steel. This steel has exceptional toughness and resistance to breakage, making it perfect for large knives and swords. The appleseed grind is a hallmark of Jay's work. A differential heat treatment line travels along the blade, showing the transition between the soft, supportive spine and the keen, hard edge. Jay believes strongly in the hand forging process and it clearly shows in his work. By forging the blade closely to shape, Jay ensures optimal edge retention.
The handle is made from presentation grade California curly redwood. Scrolls of fine silver are meticulously inlaid into each side of the wood. The redwood meets with a column of Indian stag antler. A polished brass guard and pommel finish out the knife.
A high quality leather sheath with a tooled basket weave design is included, making it easy to keep this knife close at hand.
