Description: Jan Wahl, is a maker to watch. He became a full time knife maker in 2009 and joined the South African Knife Makers Guild in 2012. Jan has excellent attention to detail. Lately, he has been hanging out with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey and Wahl has been picking up some serious new skills.
The 8-1/4 inch dagger ground blade is made from a damascus san mai (san mai suminagashi) forged by Mastersmith Kevin Harvey in South Africa. Layers of damascus are formed from alternating layers of carbon steels. The symmetrical damascus accentuates Wahl's perfect grinds.
The handle combines 18k gold plated brass fittings with a fluted maple burl handle. The pommel and guard were cast from brass using the lost wax technique. They were then carved and stippled. The end of each side of the quillion guard is inlaid with a faceted cubic zirconia. A ruby cubic zirconia is set at the center of each side of the guard. Damascus spacers surround the fluted maple handle. The handle is completed with twisted 9k gold wire set into the fluting.
Exceptional work throughout!
