Description: Des Horn is one of the fathers of the South African knife industry. His influence can be clearly seen in other South African's work, but also extends into knives made around the world. Whether put to a daily carry folder or an art knife, his attention to detail and skill is legendary.
The Flipvubu is Des' flipper design Imbuvu -- now using a standard flipper tab instead of a front flipper design. The blade is made from Swedish Damasteel which has been double tempered and cryogenically treated in liquid nitrogen. This style of treatment results in an incredibly long lasting edge, and high resistance to chipping.
The blade is perfectly centered and has silky smooth action. It is easily opened using the flipper mechanism. The blade rotates on 36 ball bearings made from silicone nitride (HRC93) developed for the Space Program. This ensures the knife retains its smooth opening for many years to come!
Black and blue Lightning strike carbon fiber scales rest on blue anodized titanium liners, keeping this knife as light as it comes. Copper strands move through the carbon fiber weave. This type of carbon fiber was originally designed for use on fighter jets to redirect electricity. Lightning strike carbon fiber is among the hardest to find knifemaking materials. A carbon fiber backbar keeps the knife light and strong. An elevated, jimped thumb ramp provides for a secure thumb purchase. Even the flipper toggle has jimping to ensure it flips open with ease every time.
The bolster is formed from zirconium with Horn's "Mercury Effect". Zirconium is a new material to the knifemaking world. It is a transitional metal that is primarily mined in South Africa and Australia. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion and scratching. Here, Des has carved the zirconium and given it a durable black oxidized surface.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
