Description: Mardi's love for making sculptural pieces clearly shows through on this masterpiece. There is something wonderfully primitive and yet playful in this uniquely dramatic piece.
Mardi began by forging the damascus from 15N20 and 1080 carbon steels. The different layers of steel are readily visible along both edges, while the central portion of the entire blade has been carved, resembling intertwining roots or branches, and thus creating a modified fuller. Pierced circles are mixed within the crisscross of roots. A Japanese influence is show in the copper habaki (blade guard) which separates the majestic blade from the handle, and is nestled up to a handsome damascus and copper oval guard.
Fossilized horse bone from the Pleistocene era provides the material for the handle, and has been carved into comfortable curves. A large sterling silver pin adorned with the maker's mark assists in retaining the handle to the blade. This is one of those pieces where the textures and color tones work amazingly well! This sword has an exceptional primitive strength with an impressive feel and appearance. Exceptional work throughout!
