Description: Dana Hackney is an up-and-coming maker with extreme promise. His sense of design is exceptional and only matched by his level of attention to detail.
This beautiful hunter has a great feel in the hand - the handle has an amazing finish and the knife is so well balanced it feels light when wielded. The feel of the hunter is well matched by its appearance. The blade is formed from Dana's own damascus, in a pattern he calls "inside-out". This pattern was originally named and developed by Mastersmith Ed Caffrey. The name of the pattern comes from the technique used to create it. After the billet is twisted and the billet squared up, the billet is cut down the middle through the length of the bar. After this, the sections are flipped with the inside of the billet outwards and rewelded back together. The sinuous pattern immediately grabs attention - and upon further inspection, it is apparent that the pattern of the damascus almost exactly matches the grain of the curly redwood. The handle itself has a great mix of light and dark tones, and there is a depth and shimmer to the wood grain that makes it almost seem to move under the light. A stainless steel guard protects the fingers, set off by bronze spacers that match the redwood well. The knife is accompanied by a pouch style leather sheath. Excellent fit and finish throughout!
