Description: Michael Rader was was honored as Mastersmith 2010 and a Journeyman Smith in June 2006. This exceptional utility knife was made in the spring of 2008. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Rader could have made it yesterday. Rader has a style all of his own. His work combines an aesthetic drawn from Medieval and Far East influences. His skill at incorporating complex woodwork into his handles has become legendary.
This integral utility knife was hand forged from 52100 carbon steel. 52100 is considered by many knifemakers and collectors to be among the best -- if not the best -- carbon steels for edge holding. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality.
The bolster is integral -- a technique that, while common in production knives, is rare in handmade knives due to the difficulty of implementation. The resulting knife is extremely durable and dramatic. The handle is formed from curly maple with amboyna burl accents. The woods are perfectly combined in complex arches -- with the seams beyond perception. By using stabilized woods, Michael is able to combine the beauty of natural wood with durability.
The knife has perfect balance and feels exceptional in the hand. It is accompanied by a pouch style, hand stitched, hand tooled leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout.
