Description: Doug Noren was welcomed as a Mastersmith at the 2004 Blade Show. His work is exceptional, drawing heavily on the work of the late William Scagel. More so than nearly any other maker, Scagel's knives have captured the imagination of American knife collectors and makers, with their unique shape and appearance.
This hatchet is very true to Scagel's designs from the solid carbon steel head and neck to the crown stag handle. The head, which measures approximately 3 1/2 inches from edge to hammer, has been differentially heat treated. The resulting hawk will have an exceptionally long lasting razor edge, yet hold up well to heavy impacts. The solid, integral metal haft also assures that this is sure to become a family heirloom.
The front of the brass guard has been beveled and fits perfectly to the 5160 haft. Alternating stacked layers of black and red fiber, nickel silver and brass, leather and ivory make for a very dramatic handle. A stag crown completes the presentation. The fit and finish is exceptional and befitting a master!
