Description: Journeyman Smith Gary Rodewald has long been one of the makers that I've enjoyed. His eye for design is only matched by his skill of implementation. When he put his hands to an integral knife, the results are really something to look at and hold on to. Integral knives are particularly hard to make by hand -- requiring precision forging and increased difficulty to fit. Integral knives, when done well, however, have an appearance and durability not found in any other knife.
The satin finished blade was forged to shape from W1 round bar. A differential heat treatment was achieved using a traditional Japanese technique whereby the spine is covered in clay during heat treatment. This results in a soft, supportive spine with an ultra-hard, long lasting cutting edge. The resulting heat treatment line (called a hamon) is dramatic and exceptional. By choosing steels such as W1 carbon steel, Gary shows a dedication to producing knives which can stand up to use and will hold their edge.
With Sambar stag becoming harder to get, excellent examples of it are a very rare find. The sambar stag is one solid piece and has been finished off with a fossil oosic cap. Exceptional work throughout!
