Description: This Willem Steenkamp custom Barlow slip joint is a fantastic utility folder. The wharncliffe blade and ergonomic handle are perfectly designed and implemented.
Willem was accepted as a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA) in May of 2007. His attention to detail is clearly evident in his knives. His fit and finish rivals that of the best makers found anywhere.
The 2.7 inch blade is hand ground RWL-34 stainless steel. RWL-34 is a premium powder metallurgy cutlery steel manufactured by ERASTEEL in Söderfors, Sweden. Because it is made from rapidly solidified powders, the microstructure of the steel is much more uniform. This gives the steel much higher strength and resistance to cracks and chips. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. It is well centered with a firm half stop -- easily opened with the right handed thumb nick.
The handle is made from presentation grade stabilized spalted maple burl. A mokume gane escutcheon and pivot collar are inlaid into the handle scales. Brass and copper in the mokume bring out warm tones in the maple burl. The inlay is flawless with absolutely no gaps. The handle is completed with red fiber spacers.
Exceptional work throughout!
