Description: Each time knives arrive from Journeyman Smith Stuart, I'm always excited to see what he has created. He is a power house and among the greatest of the forging South African makers. Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became a Journeyman Smith in June 2019.
Stuart hand forged the drop point blade from 52100 carbon steel. This high performing steel is considered to be among the best steels (if not the very best) by many knifemakers and knife users. Makers such as Mastersmiths Bill Burke, Bob Kramer, and Ed Fowler have pioneered this long edge holding steel. The blade features a hand rubbed satin finish. Stuart's J.S. mark is on the left side of the blade and his maker's mark is featured on the right side.
The handle is sculpted from presentation grade quilted birch secured using a hand domed brass pin. The exceptional wood has a dramatic chatoyancy, where the figure appears to change when turned in the light. The handle is perfectly fit to the brass guard. It is carved to swell toward the front of the handle, move into a slimmer waist and finally to swell again at the end of the handle for a comfortable grip.
To protect the knife during transportation, a custom cowhide leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
