Description: This folding knife was made by South African knifemaker Herucus Blomerus. A resident of Pretoria, Herucus (pronounced 'eh-roo-koos') has been a proud member of the South African Knifemakers Guild since 2005. Herucus' folders combine incredibly smooth action with a high level of fit and finish. This flipper is among his masterpieces to date, combining tremendous materials with an action that can't be beat!
The blade is perfectly centered and has incredibly smooth action -- easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous flipper toggle. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play.
The sheepsfoot blade is formed from stainless damascus san mai. A central bar of Takefu SG2 powdered metallurgical stainless steel is surrounded by alternating layers of stainless steel and nickel. At Hrc 63-64, this folder has among the best edge holding of any Blomerus knife ever made. The resulting damascus is high contrast and immediately captivating. The linear damascus reveals Ricus' complex, super-clean grind. The flats are mirror polished, nearly hiding the pattern. The blade is hollow ground for easy maintenance.
Zirconium bolsters are hand-engraved by Belgium-born artist Julien Marchal. Marchal combined a flame with a running wheat pattern. Julien studied engraving and gun making at Léon Mignon Liège in Belgium prior to emigrating to South Africa. The bolsters are perfectly fit to the antique Westinghouse Micarta scales. This Micarta was developed in 1910 by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as an industrial thermo-set laminate for electrical insulation. This light toned Micarta was lost in a warehouse and only recently discovered. The top shows the beautiful yellowing with age that makes this unique Micarta so captivating. Titanium liners have been hand filed into a vine pattern and anodized blue. The liners surround a matching SG2 san mai backbar. The 3D machined titanium pocket clip with ceramic retention ball is mounted for right-handed, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
