Description: This Whaler's Knife by Tobin Hill is among his most impressive knives to date. Features like fully integral liners and bolsters along with an intricate five stop large blade show off his skills as a knifemaker. Though Tobin has only been making knives for a bit over 3 years, his work does not reflect the short time he has been at it. Tobin learned to make knives from legendary folder maker Bill Ruple. He is clearly a maker to watch.
Tobin was inspired to make this knife after seeing the Great Eastern Cutlery #46 Whaler knife. The two large elephant toenail blades are based on the original Sunfish pattern, a pattern believed to be over a hundred years old. The oversized blades were able to handle the extremely thick rope used while on ships or out in oil fields.
The large blades are formed from raindrop damascus forged by Joe Burke. Joe is the son of renowned knife and damascus maker Mastersmith Bill Burke. The large blades offer a impressive display of this captivating pattern. The larger blade has five stops built in including the closed and open position. This allows for some additional cutting angles perfect for cutting thick rope or sails. The smaller blade has firm, but smooth action with a half stop. Both blades can be opened easily using the available nail nicks.
The handle is just as impressive as the blades. The front and rear bolsters are fully integral with the 416 stainless steel liners. Mammoth bark scales are secured to the liners using 6 pins. The ancient ivory combines caramel tones with chocolate veins and hints of rare blue tones. The stainless steel liners are hand fileworked. A stainless steel escutcheon with Hill's maker's mark is inlaid into the left side of the ivory. Because this knife is forged from carbon steels, we recommend using camellia oil to oil both the blade and mammoth bark handle.
An impressive large slipjoint that is sure to be admired in any collection!
