Description: This exceptional chopper was made by French knifemaker Guy Poggetti. Guy, who is 52, lives in Marseille and has been a knifemaker since 2003 and went full time in 2008. I was very excited when I was introduced to him by Mastersmith Adam DesRosiers and immediately asked if we could get some of his work for BladeGallery.
This Guy Pogetti custom Sparus Chopper is a fantastic field use knife -- yet it would feel equally comfortable in most any collection. The upswept blade and ergonomic handle are perfectly designed for any task at hand.
The blade was hand forged from C130 carbon steel. C130 is a French carbon steel with 1.25% carbon, ensuring a keen cutting edge. This spring steel provides a great edge with exceptional durability and impact resistance. Borrowing a technique from Japanese swords, Poggetti applied clay to the spine prior to quenching. This results in a supportive spine with a keen, long lasting edge. The undulating heat treatment line is called a hamon. The blade is convex ground for more mass behind the cutting edge. The flats are forge finished. The long swedge is brought just shy of a cutting edge. A distal taper of both the blade and tang ensure perfect balance. You won't want to put this knife down!
Hand scales are presentation grade Tasmanian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), native to Tasmania and eastern Australia. Although called “blackwood,” the name is somewhat of a misnomer, as its wood is not at all black. Rather, its lustrous golden brown grain and figure is very similar to Hawaiian curly koa. Handle scales are set with hand domed pins. The sides of the full tang are raised, surrounding the handle scales. This is a dramatic effect that I have not seen from other makers. The handle is completed with a leather lanyard holding a Tasmanian blackwood bead.
Exceptional work throughout!
