Description: Mastersmith Bill Burke makes knives that are as high performance as a knife can get. He is best known for his sheep horn hunting knives and chef's knives, but for the last couple years he has been making some of the most elegant slip joint folders to be found anywhere.
The san mai blade was hand forged by Burke. He combined a 52100 carbon steel core and surrounded that with thin layers of 416 stainless steel. The result is the exceptional edge holding of carbon steel with significantly easier care. Many knifemakers and users feel that 52100 is among the best, if not the best steel currently used for knifemaking. The transition line between stainless steel and carbon steel is exceptionally dramatic. The blade can be easily opened using the traditional nail nick and locks into place with a solid liner lock. The blade is perfectly centered with smooth, even action.
The handle combines rare and elegant muskox horn scales with forged bolsters. Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is an Arctic mammal of the family Bovidae. Muskoxen primarily live in Arctic North America and Greenland, with small populations in Sweden, Siberia and Norway. The world population is estimated at between 80,000 and 125,000. Muskox horn is among the rarest handle materials used by knifemakers today. The bolsters are dovetailed to the horn for a perfect fit.
Both the backbar and the bolsters reflect the san mai technique Burke used for the blade. The bolsters have a 52100 carbon steel core with 416 stainless steel on the outside surface. The backbar is a matching section of san mai steel.
