Description: Johann van Deventer, better known as JD, aims to produce unique knives of the highest degree of craftsmanship. He took up knife making in 2005 and became a member of the Knifemaker’s Guild of Southern Africa by 2007. He works in a one man shop and even builds most of his machines himself! He is clearly a maker to keep an eye on.
This front flipper is a tactical folder with absolutely exceptional action. The blade is well centered and silky smooth -- easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous front flipper toggle. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create smooth action with no blade play.
The blade is formed from N690 stainless steel, a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds on to it. Increased toughness gives it better resistance to edge chipping. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. By satin finishing the grinds and polishing the flats, JD has emphasized his clean grind lines.
The scales are comprised of red/black lightning strike carbon fiber. This type of carbon fiber was originally designed for use on fighter jets to redirect lightning when it hits the plane. Lightning strike carbon fiber is among the hardest to find knifemaking materials. The bolster is anodized zirconium. Zirconium is a new material to the knifemaking world. It is a transitional metal that is primarily mined in South Africa and Australia. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion. The ultra-light textured titanium pocket clip is mounted for tip-up carry.
Exceptional work throughout!
