Description: We are proud to introduce this piece by Francesca Wilburn, daughter of ABS Mastersmith Aaron Wilburn. Much to Aaron's delight, Francesca followed in her father's footprints starting in 2011, and is currently an ABS apprentice under her father. As noted on the blade, this is the second of three knives that she has created -- and this certainly suggests a strong future as a knifemaker!
The clip point blade was forged to shape and differentially heat treated, bringing the edge to critical temperature then oil quenching three times. Many thermal cycles and normalizing steps ensure consistent grain structure. The blade was then tempered at 400 degrees twice, for exceptional durability. A cryogenic treatment between tempers enhances the edge holding ability. The blade is 52100 carbon steel, a material many makers and users believe to be the best steel in regards to edge holding and durability. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality.
The handle is formed from presentation grade Arizona desert ironwood. Warm tones of cinnamon and burnt umber dominate the handle and display a subtle chatoyancy - an effect similar to a tiger's eye gemstone. The handle feels so natural in the hand, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. A serious field knife for the avid hunter, but at home in any collection!
