Description: This exceptional folding knife was made by South African knifemaker Herucus Blomerus. I was very excited when Andre Thorburn and Andre Van Heerden introduced me to their friend. His work immediately caught my attention. A resident of Pretoria, Herucus (pronounced 'eh-roo-koos') has been a proud member of the South African Knifemakers Guild since 2005.
This folder features a unique opening system developed by fellow South African knifemaker Andre Thorburn, called a front flipper. This modification on a flipper opening is incredibly easy to use and does not catch when stored in the pocket. When combined with the IKBS ball bearing system, the action is phenomenal!! The Ikoma Korth Bearing System (IKBS) was originally designed to fit balisong knives and uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. This is among the smoothest opening mechanisms I have ever felt.
The blade is formed from Swedish Damasteel. The complex damascus pattern is called Odin's Eye. The steel is particularly high contrast and immediately captivating. The flats have been polished to a mirror finish, nearly eliminating the pattern, whereas the hollow grinds feature a deep etch. The combined finishes are exquisite, emphasizing the perfect, clean grind lines.
Highly figured spalted ironwood with scales have a nice mix of mid and dark warm tones with a tight wavy figure. The wood glued to red micarta backing for strength and durability.
The bolsters were meticulously hand engraved by Belgium-born artist Julien Marchal, who studied engraving and gun making at Léon Mignon Liège in Belgium. Vine fileworked, light blue anodized titanium liners perfectly complement this handsome gentleman's folder.
Herucus is clearly a maker to keep an eye out for - exceptional fit and finish throughout!
