Description: Tak Fukuta is a member of the American Knife Guild who lives in Japan and runs his family's knife making factory. Since the 1970s, Tak has been designing and making his own knives as well as working on design collaborations with other knife companies. In the late 1970s and early 80s, he often worked with Parker Co and Frost and Parker. He continues to design knives that go into production with companies such as Junglee.
This folder is a reproduction of an early Confederate locking folder, "Johnny Reb" being a personification of the Confederate states of Civil War era USA (Billy Yank is his northern counterpart). The latter part of Johnny's name is derived from "rebellion".
The blade is 512 layer damascus, hand forged by Tak from carbon steels. The boot ground blade features a pronounced swedge and clean, sleek grind lines. A long thumb nick on the blade allows for easy opening and a secure back lock ensures the blade won’t falter once opened! A beautifully formed silver guard with elaborate ornamentation joins the blade and handle. The handle itself has scales formed from Brazilian rosewood, set on brass liners. The brass brings out the warmth of the rosewood well. The handle is completed with five nickel pins and an escutcheon.
The entire piece has a satisfying heft and is a faithful and respectful reproduction of knives carried in 1860s America. This was a limited edition that Tak created for Parker Cut Co. in 1987. This knife is number 51 of 100 that were made and is serial numbered on the blade.
