Description: This European style straight razor is a real pleasure in the hand. The polished damascus spine has been nicely polished for a comfortable grip. The ebony and bloodwood handle is also nicely rounded. Dan is making 10 razors with this basket weave damascus pattern -- each entirely unique. This is number 8 of 10 made.
This razor is made from multiple types of steel forge-welded together in Dan's studio in Washington State. This results in what is known as pattern welded steel, or mosaic damascus. The process is quite technical and extremely labor intensive. 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels were forged together into a basket weave pattern. The complex pattern was then forge welded to an 01 carbon steel edge for exceptional edge holding. The blade was then surface ground before and after heat treating to assure straightness.
Dan has spent a considerable amount of time perfecting his heat treatment process. The blade was hardened using high temperature molten salts and quickly cooled (quenched) in oil. The blade was then cryogenically tempered in liquid nitrogen to achieve sub-zero temperatures. This relieves stresses in the steel caused by the hardening process. The resulting steel is very hard and tough with excellent edge holding abilities.
The blade is set in a carved ebony handle. A bloodwood spacers adds accent. Stainless steel adjustable screws allow for the tension to be adjusted.
