Description: Mastersmith Jerry Lairson has amazing integrity in his designs and skill in his implementation. The satin finished blade in this outstanding camp knife has been forged to shape from 5160 carbon steel and martempered for optimal grain structure and strength. Martempering is a form of interrupted quenching in which the steel is quenched rapidly from its hardening temperature to about 450°F, held at 450°F until the temperature is uniform, and then cooled in air to room temperature.
Jerry Lairson is well known for his skill at rope cutting and it is no surprise that when he decided to make a camp knife, the results would be exceptional. The blade is perfectly balanced for a strong swing. The thickest part of the blade is about half way along the spine, bringing the weight toward the tip. It moves out from this place, becoming thinner both toward the tip and the end of the full tang. The polished edge is razor sharp. Jerry heat blued the spine and ricasso, softening and strengthening the spine. The rainbow-like result of this process adds drama to this beautifully simple knife. A handle of carved and textured teak wood gives assurance of a secure grip. The solid handle is completed with brass rivets and a lanyard tube. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
