Description: This is a rare find from arguably one of the most famous bowie knife makers in the world: Bill Bagwell. Bill was one of the founding members of the American Bladesmith Society and is believed to have been the second modern bladesmith to make pattern welded damascus steel. Bagwell was on the original Board of Directors for the American Bladesmith Society along with William F. Moran, Jr., Don Hastings and B.R. Hughes. Bagwell was honored as a one of the first ABS mastersmiths in 1981. He built a reputation not only on his fighting bowies, but also on the knife writing he did for magazines such as Soldier of Fortune and Tactical Knives. He also authored the famous book: Bowies, Big Knives, and the Best of Battle Blades. His knife combat techniques have been taught as part of the Special Forces training at Ft. Bragg. This knife was kept in a private collection and was meticulously cared for since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Bill could have made it yesterday!
The massive 11 inch blade was forged by Bagwell from 5160 carbon steel and brought to a polished finish. 5160 is known to have the high toughness and chip resistance needed for larger knives such as fighters and bowies. The top clip stops just short of being fully sharpened. The edge features a thick convex, ground for maximum resistance to breakage and chipping. Bagwell's touchmark is on the right ricasso.
The handle is a downturned section of sambar stag. The natural texture of the stag provides a comfortable slip-resistant grip. A polished brass spacer and oval guard finish the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand tooled brown leather sheath made by Bagwell is included.
Excellent work throughout on a very rare find!
