Description: This Alaskan Hunter with Ancient Walrus Ivory was made by James Behring Jr of Behring Made. He and his team of craftsmen create knives with innovation, quality craftsmanship and functionality. James grew up in rural Michigan, playing in the woods bow hunting, fishing and skeet shooting. As a boy, his father taught him to hunt and fish on the lakes and in the forests of Norther Michigan and later in the Upper Peninsula. The Behring family had a hunting camp in the UP where James would spend much of his fall. His youth made him understand the value of a great knife. This knife has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Behring could have made it yesterday.
The 4-1/2 inch blade is hand forged O1 carbon steel. O1 carbon steel is an exceptional hard use tool steel that combines excellent edge holding with tough chip resistance. The blade features a forged finish along the top and is hollow ground for a high performance edge.
The handle is sculpted from ancient walrus ivory, secured to the tang using a stainless steel pin. The ancient ivory used was an artifact section that was most likely an Inuit ancient tool handle. The sides of the handle have been shaped and polished. The end of the handle features the end of the ancient tool handle. Ivory artifacts have become increasingly rare over the years. Alternating black G-10 and muskox spacers separate the handle from the polished stainless steel guard. Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is an Arctic mammal of the family Bovidae. Muskoxen primarily live in Arctic North America and Greenland, with small populations in Sweden, Siberia and Norway. The world population is estimated at between 80,000 and 125,000. Muskox horn is among the rarest handle materials used by knifemakers today.
To keep the knife close at hand, a pouch style brown leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
