Description: Dale Miller has been making knives since 2015, after many years of working in wood, building musical instruments, speakers, hand planes, and other pieces. He uses knives in the kitchen, regularly making charcuterie and tsukemono (Japanese pickles) and uses this experience to inform his knife design and execution. His mission is to make functional, beautiful knives out of the best available materials. Lately he has been making high quality slipjoint and linerlock folders. This Swayback Flipper is a nice example of Dale's clean work.
The blade is 52100 carbon steel, hardened to 62-63 Hrc. A black oxide finish from a coffee etch provides some limited rust resistance. Many knifemakers as well as knife users feel that 52100 is among the best (if not the best) steel used in the modern knife industry. It provides an exceptionally keen, long lasting edge. Dale's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are briar burl (Erica arborea) from Spain – the same type of burl used to make pipes. The burl grows for at least 40 years before it is harvested by hand, boiled, and dried for 2-5 years. The boiling relieves drying stresses that cause splitting and cracking and also darkens the wood to a richer color. The scales are heirloom fit to bronze anodized titanium liners. The backbar and matching pocket clip are 1045 carbon steel mirror polished and hot gun blued. The pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
