Description: Joanne Wright is a young, female bladesmith currently apprenticing under fellow South African bladesmith Stuart Smith. Joanne has also taken forging courses at renowned bladesmith school Heavin Forge taught by Mastersmith Kevin Harvey and Mastersmith Heather Harvey. In addition to bladesmithing, Joanne has a passion for martial arts which often comes across in her work. We are excited to offer her work on BladeGallery.
This Japanese-influence tanto/utility blade was hand forged from 1070 carbon steel. Borrowing from the world of Japanese swords, Wright coated the spine with clay prior to heat treatment. The clay acts as a heat sink, keeping the spine softer and supportive, while allowing the edge to be exceptionally hard. The undulating heat treatment line seen in the blade is called a gunome hamon. The spine is nicely rounded for comfort. Joanne's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is dyed and stabilized ash, secured to the full tang using three hand domed pins. The distal tapered tang creates a perfect balance in hand. The contoured scales fill out the hand nicely and provide a comfortable grip.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand tooled leather custom sheath (also by Wright) is included.
Excellent work throughout!
