I built my first two knives in Jr. high School metal shop. That was a different time, for sure. I was raised around wood and metal working tools. My father always had a shop at our home. I am a third generation blacksmith and knife maker. My Grandfather was a watchmaker in Switzerland and a blacksmith in this country (Knoxville TN.) I learned a few years ago that he was also a knife maker. Folders and fixed blades were his specialty. My father also made kitchen knives and my mother used a set he made for many years. I would like to have them now.

When I was a teenager, my father moved the family to a small town in Nebraska and bought a blacksmith shop. This is where I worked after school and summers. I could not keep up sharpening plow shares and cultivator shovels. Knife making is something that I do for the enjoyment of creating and using the skills I was taught as a child.

In 1988, I was in the trucking business as a owner/operator. I moved to Quartzsite Arizona about halfway between Phoenix and Los Angeles. Needing something to do when I was at home, one day the light came on and the rest is history. This was something I always wanted to do, and now I had the time. I sold my first knife in about 1990. I had to get off the road in 1996, so I have been a full time knife maker since then.

Bowie knives are my specialty, big ones and bigger ones, 14 in. to 16 in., up to 18 in. long. I also make a lot of Bowies that are only 9 in. to 10 in. long. I even build swords and daggers up to about 30 in. long. These blades are forged from new 5160 steel and heat treated by myself. All of my forged blades are zone tempered (hard edge spring temper spine).

I subscribe to the Neo Tribal way of thinking. These knives are finished with a rustic look which is just like it came form the forge. The bevels are ground, giving the knife blade a two tone look. This is done to keep the cost down and to appeal to the Black Powder/ Buckskinner / Cowboy era person. I design most of these knives to come with a stag crown stick handle (yes, I have some Sambar stag that I am using, which is from my private stock), and brass guard as standard. I also do a hand rubbed or polished finish.

I build stainless steel knives using the stock removal process. These are knives that are under 7 in long. But, I will build larger bowie knives or any other large knife out of stainless steel on a custom basis. The steels that I use are 440C for kitchen and fishing knives, ATS34 for all other knives. I send all of my stainless steel knives to Paul Bos to be heat treated. I can make it hard but it is not right, so it is best to have him do it, and I prefer to get the job done right when it's something as important as one of my customer's knives. These knives range from small 2 in. blades to about 5 inlong.

My focus is to build nice knives that are meant to be used, at a reasonable cost. I also build each knife and sheath to be the best available in workmanship, materials and performance. A knife is meant to cut and hold an edge. It must feel good in the hand and be balanced right ... or it is not any good. That's my belief!
